Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Ethekwini Hospital boasts a full range of specialist obstetrics and gynaecological services, including gynaecological endoscopy. Our state of the art digital operating theatres provide a platform for surgeons to perform advanced minimally invasive surgery in addition, we offer specialist services including, amongst others, fetal medicine, menopause and sexual health, urogynaecology, and endometriosis treatment. Our fully computerised multi-channel uro-dynamics unit is operated by gynaecologists and urologists with a special interest in pelvic floor reconstructive surgery.

Our focus is on minimally invasive surgery (or laparoscopic surgery), a rapidly evolving method of surgical treatment, with significant benefits to our patients.
A laparoscopic examination is performed under general anaesthesia. A small incision is made in the umbilicus (belly button) through which a telescope is inserted. A miniature camera is attached to the telescope and the interior organs can be inspected. Surgery can be performed through similar tiny incisions.

The benefits to patients include;

• Cosmetic benefits of having a smaller scar as a result of a much smaller incision
• A shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery, allowing the patient to return to normal activity far sooner than more invasive surgery
• Smaller incisions involve less operative trauma and reduce post operative pain.

Laparoscopic surgery is the preferred method of treating certain conditions, such as endometriosis. The laparoscope provides better visibility and access to certain areas in the pelvis, and the magnification afforded by the camera allows for more precise dissection.

At Ethekwini Heart Hospital & Heart Centre, our doctors have taken a special interest in the treatment and care of endometriosis. Endometriosis, the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, is highly prevalent amongst women of reproductive age. Symptoms of endometriosis include chronic pelvic pain, heavy and painful periods, infertility and/or pain during and after sexual intercourse.

The hospital is very keen to establish a Centre of Excellence for the comprehensive and holistic management of Endometriosis. The key role players; gynaecologists, surgeons, pain management specialists, sexual health counsellors, and psychologists with a special interest in endometriosis, are currently working at Ethekwini Hospital.
