Lenmed Ethekwini, Your Stroke Hospital of Choice!

The Angels, (a European Stroke Organisation) identified Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre for its commitment and dedication to working towards Stroke, after having undergone the necessary training and simulations. This recognition was announced with the handing over of the Angels Stroke Bag to Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre Stroke team. The Angels Stroke bag is part of the Angels Initiative and training tool.

The purpose of the bag is to show an improvement in door-to-needle times by ensuring that all staff knows exactly where equipment and medication is kept in the instance of an acute stroke. It serves to prevent delays and the hospitals are encouraged to keep the bag and its contents in the CT scanner room. In this way, patients can be thrombolysed (the dissolution of a blood clot, especially as induced artificially by infusion of an enzyme into the blood); if eligible in the CT scanner without needing to be transported back to Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit which would cause further delays.

Hospital Manager Niresh Bechan said, “If you’re having a stroke, it’s critical that you get medical attention right away. Immediate treatment may minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death. Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, is your best choice. We have a dedicated Stroke line number, please save it on you phones, 086 13 44 237. It could be life changing. Remember time is brain!”

Every 30 minutes a stroke patient who could have been saved, dies or is left permanently disabled, not just because of the stroke, but because he or she had been treated in the wrong hospital. In fact, less than a third of stroke patients are currently treated in dedicated stroke centres. This means thousands of patients fail to get the specialist care they urgently need.
