Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital achieves another milestone – Only Private Hospital in KZN

Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre (LEHHC) is the only private hospital in KwaZulu- Natal that offers the much needed services for paediatric cardiac surgery. In additional to this essential paediatric service, you will find almost all of the various paediatric sub-specialists based at this facility, setting the bar for this modern child- centered healthcare facility. These well-trained and experienced sub-specialists include Peadiatric Cardiologists, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Paediatric General Surgeon, Paediatric Neurologist, Paediatric Nephrologist, Paediatric Hematologists, Paediatric Pulmonologist and Paediatricians.
Several successful lifesaving cardiac surgeries have already been performed and many children are seeing the benefits of engaging with the specialists for their relevant health matters.

This Paediatric centre of excellence is the brainchild of LEHHC manager Niresh Bechan. “It was critical for the province to have this service because all paediatric cardiac cases had to otherwise be referred to Johannesburg and Cape Town. This meant displacing families and moving children away from their environment to access this service,” said Bechan.

The paediatric cardiac surgery has been driven under the auspices of internationally renowned, veteran paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, Professor Rob Kingsley. According to Professor Kingsley, there is no complete and adequate paediatric cardiac service in KwaZulu-Natal and by not threating infants and children, these paediatrics are being denied a normal life. Professor Kinsley, who beliefs in collegiality, has been supporting Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre team, headed by adult and paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Darshan Reddy. His multidisciplinary team includes, cardiologist Dr Himal Dama and Foetal Medicine Specialist Dr Ismail Bhorat.

Taking care of all the other Peadiatric needs are Paediatricians Dr Vinesh Moodley and Dr Thanusha Naidoo; Paediatric General Surgeon Dr Ash Maharaj; Paediatric Neurologists Dr Yavini Reddy and Dr Rajeshree Govender; Paediatric Haematologists Dr Keshnie Moodley and Dr Nicolene Moonsamy; Paediatric Nephrologist Dr Elaene Naicker and Paediatric Pulmonologist Dr Medeshni Annamalai .

In addition, Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre has numerous accolades including being a Paediatric and adult Heart, Stroke, Renal Dialysis centre of excellence, offers a holistic range of medical disciplines with advanced medical technology and equipment complimented by an experienced team of specialists, nursing staff and support services including a 24 hour emergency service.

LEHHC was the only private hospital in KwaZulu-Natal to have been selected to take part in a nationally driven stroke simulation (dummy patient run) project coordinated by Angels South Africa in conjunction with Boehringer Ingelheim Global Office and Angels Europe. The entire simulation was recorded on a Go-Pro camera, which was later evaluated. According to feedback received from Angels Consultants this simulation was a huge success, with the door to needle time being 30 minutes and 10 seconds.

Niresh Bechan said, “Our stroke teams are well trained and experienced with dealing with stroke emergencies. Although the simulation was almost half the expected door to needle time of 60 minutes, we have on record the door to needle time of 16 minutes in respect of an actual case.”

According to Angels, every 30 minutes a stroke patient who could have been saved, dies or is permanently disabled because they are treated in the wrong hospital. One of the most important aspects that affect outcomes in stroke is time to treatment. Getting to the right hospital that is equipped to treat a stroke will make all the difference. The faster a stroke victims is treated, the less damage to the body and especially to the brain. If a loved one or friend suffers a stroke, you need to make sure that he or she gets to right hospital as soon as possible. The time window for getting the best results from thrombolytic drugs is three hours from the first signs of stroke. LEHHC is a Stroke Centre of Excellence.
